FIP is a fatal, systemic viral disease caused by a variant of feline coronavirus (FCoV).
FCoV is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route. The virus can spread more easily in crowded environments, for example catteries and multi-cat households. Not all cats infected with FCoV will develop the disease; only when the virus mutates and invades immune cells will it cause FIP. It usually has two type.
(1) Wet FIP: The typical symptom is fluid accumulation in the abdominal or pleural cavity, leading to abdominal distension and difficulty breathing.
(2) Dry FIP: There are no obvious fluid accumulation symptoms; the manifestations are more diverse, commonly including weight loss, persistent fever, eye inflammation, and neurological symptoms.
This disease was fatal before, but with the advancement of antiviral treatments in recent years, the survival rate has improved.
