Molnupiravir is a nucleoside analog antiviral drug, it was initially developed to treat human COVID-19. It is a prodrug, after oral administration, Molnupiravir is converted in vivo to its active metabolite, EIDD-1931 (NHC). EIDD-1931 can inhibit coronavirus replication by inducing viral replication errors.
In cat FIP disease, the pathogen is a variant of feline coronavirus (FCoV), against which Molnupiravir has also shown in vitro antiviral activity, and therefore it was explored for treatment.
One clinical trial treated naturally occurring FIP cats orally with Molnupiravir, 10–21 mg/kg, every 12 hours, 84 days. The results showed that, 78% of the cats survived, and they significant improvement in clinical and laboratory parameters. The relapse rate was approximately 12%, but most relapsed cats entered remission after a second course of treatment. Also, the treatment was well-tolerated, there was no serious adverse events leading to discontinuation of treatment.
